Boy Scouts of America Shining Light Stage

Challenge

  • More than 100,000 scouts, leaders, and staff members attended the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) 2010 National Scout Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia. The BSA needed an easy way to communicate time sensitive information to such a large number of scouts, leaders and staff attending the week long event.
  • Additionally, to help celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the BSA, a live concert was held at the Jamboree in an event called “A Shining Light Across America.” With well over 100,000 people attending the event, the BSA wanted scouts and leaders to be able to text their comments and thoughts about the event to the BSA short code (272100) and then have their text messages reviewed and displayed on a jumbotron.

Solution

  • mms implemented a mobile solution to enable SMS alerts to be delivered to 4 different groups of Jamboree attendees: Scouts, Leaders, Staff, and Visitors.
  • The mms COIN text-to-screen application was used during the “A Shining Light Across America” event.
  • The text-to-screen platform received the text messages, where they were reviewed by BSA staff members before being exported to a web page (built by mms). The web page featured select text messages, which were then displayed on a jumbotron for all attendees to view during the show.

Results

  • Over 185,000 text alert messages were sent during the week notifying attendees of event schedule changes, weather updates and other timely announcements.
  • Attendees of the “A Shining Light Across America” event sent over 66,000 text messages to the mms text-to-screen platform during a 3 hour window.
